Wright: I won't let it ruin me

Snakebite defiant after defeats

PETER WRIGHT has vowed that he won’t let Premier League nightmare RUIN his career.

The Livingston-born ace lost again to Gerwyn Price in Berlin on Thursday night, making it just one win nine weeks.

Wright, 53, is slumped at the bottom of the table but he is determined not to let it get him down.

He said: “I’m losing every week but it’s one of those things, somebody has got to lose.

“But it’s the way you deal with it. You can’t let it affect you. The Premier League has ruined many players’ careers, it’s not going to ruin mine.

“Because I know how to win. I also know how to win big majors. I will turn it around.

“I can still make the Play-Offs, I believe I can. My game is there, I’m playing well in practice. I’ve just got to take it up there and finish people off. I’m not finishing people off, that’s the problem.

“If I can start doing that, I’ll start turning a corner and then I’ll qualify.

“Toughest period of my career? I suppose so. Obviously having the time off has backfired. I thought if I have time off, I’ll keep myself fresh for the Premier League and keep me fresh for the Europeans, I might be OK.

“But obviously it’s not working. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll have to go back to the ProTour events to maybe keep me sharp.”

Wright was leading Price 3-1 at one stage in front of a sell-out 10,000 in Germany. But then he lost five legs on the bounce to remain rooted to the foot of the table.

He added: “Other players would think about it. I’ll just turn up each week, it’s doesn’t matter what has happened before. I know I can beat any of these guys in any tournament if I turn up.

“This run has not put a negative on my game at all. This Premier League it’s not quite working. Next week it will turn, I’ll start winning and qualify and everyone will go ‘where did he come from?’”

Wright also shrugged off that his off-stage worries with family illnesses and operations has made a difference to his game.

He continued: “Obviously the off oche stuff is affecting me, maybe in the background.

“Jo is here this week with me, so there’s no excuse. I don’t think it is actually affecting my game. It’s just one of them things.

“I didn’t punish Gezzy or finish him off or hit the big scores at the right times.”
